Half Term – Three weeks to go.

Over the weekend we mainly just chilled out. I actually got quite a lot more done than I thought I would but really out of just wanting to do it rather than needing to get it done. I marked both the year 10 and year 8 assessments and organised myself for the coming week.

On Monday I really needed to get out of the house so Greg and I went for a spontaneous walk nearby and ended up having a lovely sandwich in a pub. It was really nice to spend time together and not worry about everything. I feel like I’m managing everything well at the moment.

I do keep feeling a bit ill but I know that’s just because I’m relaxing and ‘on holiday’ it happens every time – feeling woffy, sick and moments of exhaustion. I don’t normally nap during the day but I have been doing recently.

During Tuesday Greg was back at work so I took the opportunity to really get to grips with some things I needed to do. I went to town and took my contract items to be scanned. That all seemed to go fine. I cashed a cheque and went shopping. I got things that I’ve needed for a while and it was nice just to go on my own, spend as much time as I wanted in places without having to worry I’m inconveniencing others. I also got some marking done, the shopping was delivered and I did a whole load of ironing which was to be continued the following day.

Wednesday was a good day. I wasn’t sure what to do with myself and couldn’t really make a plan but anyway I managed to wash my car, dig a bed, do pleanty of assessment marking and catch the sun! It’s been a glorious day and hopefully tomorrow will be the same.

On Thursday my parents came to visit. I had a really good day. I got nice things in for lunch and made a shepherd’s pie for dinner. I was excited to show them how the garden’s progressing, the food we’re growing and my plans for it over the summer. I really wanted to sit out on our new garden furniture and to be able to offer them gin and tonics – like a real adult and we did. It was really nice. I also took them to our local garden centre and my mum and I had naughty cream teas. I had a lovely day.

Friday was a little rainier which was good as a) the garden needed it and b) I needed to sit inside and polish off my assessment marking which went fine. I also had a bash at getting through my campus pack and teachers’ standards evidence which went fine – just time consuming.

Over the weekend my brother was coming to visit which was nice and I hoped that sometime in during the weekend I’d be able to have a go at finishing off my to do list which only consisted of Campus Pack and PSHE admin. They were only type up jobs but they’re the kind of jobs that have been hanging around for ages and keep getting put on the back burner because they’re not that important but nevertheless they need to be done at some point over the next three weeks.

Now that my assignment will be done and handed in this weekend hopefully my weekends will be freeer so I might be able to get things done then.

In other news I got my supply teacher contract through so that’s all official and I should start work in four weeks!

I’m looking forward to going back to school tomorrow but I’m not looking forward to the get up time!

My birthday and preparing for the new term.

On Monday I had a fairly productive day. I did loads of washing and loads of house jobs and gardening. I finished washing and cleaning my car and I also did loads of research for my research assignment. I booked a consultation at the library to talk over my research methods etc for tomorrow which also means I can return the books I’ve borrowed that I’m not using and hopefully I’ll have an equally productive day tomorrow.

On Tuesday I had another really productive day. I managed to book the hair cut I was after and went to a meeting at uni about my research assignment – read a whole book for it and started on a second. I’ve made some really great progress. I hope I can keep up this pace.

Wednesday I went for my hair cutting which was good and then caved and did all my resource printing at home as I got an email from school to say the printer room was being re-done and might be out of action for a week or so. Rather than risk it an potentially have to deal with the stress I decided I’d rather have the cost of ink and paper. I then got on with yet more reading for my research assignment. I’m really pleased with how it’s going.

Thursday Greg had the day off so that I could go to the drs, wait in for our packages and cleaned the house. It all happened, though not in the order we expected and finally made it to my dads. We had a lovely ‘grazing tea’ and watched ‘Spectre’ which my dad had never seen before. It was really nice.

Friday was my birthday. I woke up early and read a whole book – I’ve read three books in three days which has been really enjoyable. We then had breakfast and I opened my presents with my family before going for a walk among the blue bells. In the afternoon we just chilled out and didn’t do too much which was lovely and in the evening we watched ‘Fantastic Beasts and where to find them’ which I haven’t seen yet and I really enjoyed.

This weekend we’re staying at my dad’s until Sunday morning we’re planning on going to the garden centre, out for a meal, taking the dogs for a lovely walk again and then visiting Greg’s family on the way back home. I’m looking forward to having Monday to prepare myself to go back to school. I hope I’ve planned enough.

The first week of the Easter holidays.

On Monday I had a really productive day. I planned the first week of year 9. I intend to keep this up – planning the first week of each year group for the first three days and then if I have time repeat, making sure I have time to relax in between. Really, the most important part is getting the first week done but the more I can do, the more ahead of myself I’ll be and the less I’ll have to do during term time.

I also did all of our washing and it dried outside on the line which was really satisfying. That was about it. I also planned to get a large pile of washing done – riveting I know.

On Tuesday my car was MOTed and serviced and I got on with my planning. All went well and I managed to get the first week of year 8 done which was great and planned to do year 10 on Wednesday.

It’s been nice to work all day – be productive and yet achieve what I set out to do as well as get other things done – really refreshing.

Wednesday was more difficult. I’ve really struggled planning for this class – they’re just such a challenging dynamic and somehow I have to get them through Macbeth against their will … I struggled through planning two lessons and wanted to get the first week done on Thursday meaning I was all planned for the first week back.

Thursday was good. I managed to get the entirety of the first week planned which felt really good and the second week provisionally planned – in other words I know what I’m doing even if I haven’t put together the lesson plans for it.

Friday I wanted to be a day of house jobs. I got loads done and also had time for a nap and to do some chilling. It was nice.

This weekend my brother is staying with us again as he’s going to a wedding nearby and Greg and I are going to my Grandma’s 80th birthday party – afternoon tea which will be nice. Not sure what Sunday will hold, maybe a chilled day with Greg, maybe an opportunity to finish off my house jobs.

Next week I think my priority will have to be my research assignment, which I’m actually looking forward to. I know I really need to get cracking with it but I have been putting it second to planning for going back.

First week at PP2.

On Monday was a full on day with inductions, safeguarding etc and being given lots to read. It really was crazy. I also met some of the English Department who seem lovely and friendly.

On Tuesday I met all my classes and teachers. I have a mixed view I think 2/3 classes will be lovely but I have a really tricky year 10 class … no sight of any drama lessons but I’ll see if I can get involved in an after school club or something.

Wednesday was another busy day. I was roped into a Geography trip for the first two periods which was nice. I got to know some of the kids and staff and then I was shadowing a year 9 pupil who happened to be in my classes – bonus. In the late afternoon I found out I had an interview but didn’t have chance to do anything as we had mindset CPD after school. I really enjoyed it but was interested that everybody else seemed to take it at face value and be open minded. At other schools I’ve been at some teachers have been quite dismissive of it. Once I got home I was so tired I didn’t feel like I could face interview preparation so I chose my poems and did a bit of research and basic planning and vowed to get up early on Thursday. Which I did

Thursday was therefore yet another crazy long day. I got up at 5.45 and into school for 7.30. Setting off 10 minutes early saved me half an hour at the other end. So I planned for an hour in the morning then I had 1 free p5 which gave me another hour. Then I had a break for my first CM meeting and stayed until 6.30 getting the rest all done. I even managed to operate the printer as we were given our official lanyards, key and fob. I can now get anywhere in the school like any other teacher – It really makes me feel like an ‘official’ member of staff and on an even keel with my colleagues – it helps to add to my sense of professionalism.

On Friday I did my interview. I arrived and we were shown into a room. There was only one other candidate who was lovely. We were given an ‘in tray task’ which I’ve never had to do before – turned out it was marking – we got given a mark scheme which I was greatful for – and I felt that that went ok. Then we had a tour of the school which was nice. The pupils seemed lovely and it was only a small school with a real sense of community. Then I taught my lesson. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great either. I reflected and prepared for the interview questions and tried not to panic. During break we met the rest of the English Department who seemed really friendly and supportive and finally was the interview. I was pleased with how that went. I really got into the swing of it and reflected critically on my lesson. I was then sent home with the promise that I’d be called later with feedback. I got the job! I got the job. I still can’t quite believe it. It’s such a relief to know that I don’t have to do anymore applications and the school is only 15 minutes away from where I live. The job is only 12 months maternity cover but it’ll get me my NQT year and a good reputation in a good school I hope. I’m thrilled.

Over the weekend I’m taking my mum to see the new Beauty and the Beast film with the rest of the family because it’s her birthday and also Mother’s day is coming up. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s our favourite and I hope it lives up to my expectations.

The Last week – ‘Outstanding’.

Hi Everyone,

On Monday I managed to get my observed lesson plan started and sent for feedback which my CM and I discussed on Tuesday evening and I started my end of placement report form. In the evening I focused on marking year 10 mini mocks.

Tuesday was a hectic day. I managed to finish marking two sets of books and got half of my EOP form done. That needed to be finished by the end of the evening so I had all on to get that and everything else done ready for the turn around.

Wednesday was another full day but managed to get everything done I wanted to. Still, I arrived home with half a class of books to mark and the hope that I’d get the other half done on Thursday afternoon, after my triangulation meeting.

Thursday was my last day at my placement 1 school. I also had my formal observation and my triangulation meeting and I got 1: Outstanding for both. I am so over the moon! In fact I got ‘Outstanding’ for all the teaching standards apart from 4 – Plan and teach well structured lessons and 5 – Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils. So they are definitely something I need to work on however, I feel like I still need to work on all of them but needless to say I’m still over the moon with that result.

On Friday my friend Becky came. It’s the first time she’s visited my house since I moved in with my partner. We gave each other our Christmas presents – she bought me a print from one of my favourite artists Neil Simone – and we had lots of tea and cake and it was such a lovely day. We both really felt like spring is on it’s way.

Over half term I have lots to do such as tidying, filing, reading, job applications, assignment re-submissions, gardening, washing my car, washing, ironing, cooking and getting back in touch with friends – all those things that I haven’t been able to do while working. But first a rest.

This all starts on Monday this weekend I intend to read and relax and reflect and just be myself and do what I want when I want. This morning as a nice start I spotted a buzzard hunting over the fields and being mobbed by other birds. It’s been a while since I spotted anything and it’s made me feel really reassured.

Thank you so much for all of those still sticking with me. I honestly thought at Christmas that I wouldn’t finish this course or this placement but thanks to the support of my wonderful friends and family. I’ve made it this far … half way. Here’s to the next 5 months – wish me luck. No really, wish me luck!

Uni all week.

This week I’ve been in Uni all week.

On Monday I had a really good day. I had a couple of lectures on catering for the more able and  EAL pupils but also finished my assignment and wrote 500 words of the next as well as spending time socialising with my course mates.

On Tuesday we had no sessions but I did have my tutorial with my course leader. I also spent the morning in uni working on my Subject Knowledge Assignment with my course mates and met Greg for lunch. In the afternoon I caught up with some admin and got on with my subject knowledge assignment.

During Wednesday I had a completely free day. I spent it tidying up my lesson plans and jazzing up my presentations. It sounds silly but just by doing that it makes me feel like I’m being more myself and giving more of me to them. I’m now really looking forward to teaching these lessons and I feel like I’ll be more myself and at ease when I’m doing it. I’ve also re-arranged some lessons to allow time for a visitor to come in and talk to the pupils about the armed forces (which ties into the action adventure topic).

On Thursday I went to a ‘Secondary Partnership Conference’ which was really informative and useful. I now feel like I have more of a grip on the type of school I want to work for.

On Friday we had an employment and SEN lecture then we handed in our Critical Reflection Assignments and got back out Planning Assignments. I got a level 7 (masters level) commendation (one below a distinction) so I was very happy with that.

Over the weekend I intend to chill, clean and catch up with house jobs. Maybe a bit of preparatory planning/editing but all in all I’ve had a good week. I just love being at University.

Next week I’m off again but will be still working on my assignments and planning. Let’s see what I get up to.

Half Term.

It’s finally half term and yet I don’t feel like there’s going to be any rest for the wicked. On Monday I spent all day just cracking on with my MTP. I have no idea how long this assignment has taken but I know that if I have to spend the same amount of time on every MTP I do that it will be simply unsustainable however, this is my second assignment and I’m putting in everything I can to it.

I did quite a lot and yet it’s not yet finished. I feel like if I can’t at least get a complete draft done by tomorrow I am going to panic. I have however, promised myself that I’m going to wash my car on Tuesday … There’s lots of other stuff I wanted to get done: a food shop, to call my dad, to make dinner and I still, as yet, haven’t done it … I didn’t have lunch till 3.30 because I’d been working none stop in an attempt to make some headway.

On Tuesday I continued to work on my MTP assignment. I’ve now completed a first draft which I feel really good about. Considering I only found out on Friday about parts of it I’ve now not only written 2000 words, to a good standard, in two day but I’m now also nearly 1000 words over the word count … I plan to cut that down during proof-reading towards the end of this week and next week.

Organised Chaos

During Wednesday I spent the day researching starters and plenaries for year 7 literacy. I also made time to wash my car. I didn’t do a very good job though because Greg had forgotten to take the hoover out for me and also it started raining. As Mr A.Mole would say “Just my luck!” Still, perhaps tomorrow I’ll get chance to finish it off and give it a polish.

Thursday I did all house jobs. I caught up on what felt like a month of ironing, finished washing my car, hoed the garden beds and that took up all of the day but I feel really good about it. My jobs list is diminishing slowly but I’ve only got three days left. I was thinking about having a day off tomorrow but I think I’m going to try and get all the jobs that I haven’t yet done yet done tomorrow and then aim to have the weekend completely free.

On Friday I got around to finding some starter and plenary ideas. I didn’t plan them too in depth because I want to see where they’ll fit in with my CM’s plans. Later I want to plan everything for Monday so I don’t have to do it later.

I’ve done everything I wanted to do this half term so I’m pretty pleased about that but I’m still so tired. I need to make it through till Christmas now and I’m really nervous.

On Monday it’ll be 43 days till I finish at my placement for Christmas and then 49 until I finish at the placement completely … I hope I can make it through.

I feel like I have so many morals and that the actual teaching will be fine but I’m struggling with the lack of time and the lack of organisation and transparency … I don’t have time to breathe. I get up at 6.15, leave at 7, arrive at school for 7.30 ish, start school at 8.30 … leave school at 4 (sometimes 5), arrive home at 4.45 (sometimes later) and finally stop for dinner at 7 … I’m in school for 9.5 hours and work for 11 … and I’ve only been on placement four weeks.

At least this assignment is virtually over but now I have to concentrate on planning activities day to day. The next step is planning the first few weeks of lessons for after Christmas and then working together a MTP for all classes after Christmas … Wish me luck!

This weekend Greg and I went to Speke hall and had some quality time together. I’ve enjoyed really resting up and getting myself together for the next 6 weeks. I hope it’s enough.
