Finally! A proper post and half term.

Monday was a good day. I taught my lessons and all went well. There has been some problems with Thursday as there is year 11 intervention on which means my year 8s can’t do their assessments then so they will have to do them on Wednesday. But I think that’ll be ok.

Other than that I left early to go to uni for an external examiners forum that went well and everyone had good things to say about the course.

Tuesday was a hard day at work but I got lots done and organised once I got home (early) it’s been nice to sit out on the garden furniture and lesson plan in the sun and I’m excited to start my new schemes of work next term. It’ll be a fresh start for a couple of weeks before we finish.

Wednesday was spent putting the finishing touches to my lesson plan for my external examiner observed lesson and Thursday I had my external examiner’s visit. I spent the morning preparing and it went well. I got a 2+ and only missed out on a 1 by a hair’s breadth – I needed to demonstrate the learning that took place through ‘show what you know’ and getting pupils to read out their work. I’m kicking myself but there you are. Finally the rest of the day was spent recovering.

Friday was my light day as usual. It has been so hot over the last few days that I took my laptop on and sunglasses and sat outside with two of the other trainees doing my planning.

This is how to plan at work!

It was a really nice relaxing day and the year 9s and I read chapter 2 of ‘Lord of the Flies’ in the sweltering heat. I managed to get all my printing done for the first week back too which is a good feeling knowing all that’s done and in the evening Greg and I went out to the pub for steak and wine which was lovely.

If I’m honest, I don’t really feel like I’m gagging for it this time around. I think I feel so at home in the department – they’re so lovely and supportive that I don’t want to leave

Over the weekend I intend to have rest and down time, then next week I want to catch up on all the jobs I have to do such as:

  • Proofreading my assignment
  • Marking three classes worth of summative assessments
  • Campus pack
  • PSHE qualification
  • Sort my contract for next year
  • Wash my car
  • The large pile of Ironing that has been accumulating
  • Work out
  • Do some gardening

I’ll be sure to keep you updated.

In other news we have more crops – this time spring onions.

First week back.

(It feels strange typing that. For a four day week it certainly has been very full on.)

Monday was a bank holiday. I woke up early and started to organise myself from the weekend and prepare for going back. I did quite a lot of jobs and just about got everything done that I wanted to ready for going back to school.

Tuesday was my first day back at school. It didn’t go too well. I had a couple of challenging classes that I need to get to grips with but I got through it. I wasn’t as productive as I’d hoped but I tried to give myself a break as it was only my first day back.

Wednesday was more free so I hoped that I would manage to be more productive which I did to a point but I was still working till 9 and didn’t manage to get any planning done.

Thursday I stayed behind late to get a load done. I did and managed to shift some lessons around as I realised I had a PSHE day on Tuesday so that’s 4 lessons I don’t have to plan which gave me some relief and meant that Friday could be spent on the remaining 6 lessons for next week.

Friday I had 3 periods free and managed to do some planning but somehow not as much as I thought … Period 5 I had my CM meeting which went well and I got some good targets to work on.

This weekend my brother is coming over again, which makes me very happy. I really hope I get some down time this weekend although I have a class of books to mark, 6 lessons to plan for next week and a 5000 word assignment to start due in a month.

I’ve really struggled this week to get back into the swing of things. I’ve not managed to get as much planning done during the week as I’d hoped and I just don’t know what else I could have done to keep up. It hasn’t helped with the broken printer etc so hopefully if I can get organised this weekend I can avoid it next week. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

The Last week – ‘Outstanding’.

Hi Everyone,

On Monday I managed to get my observed lesson plan started and sent for feedback which my CM and I discussed on Tuesday evening and I started my end of placement report form. In the evening I focused on marking year 10 mini mocks.

Tuesday was a hectic day. I managed to finish marking two sets of books and got half of my EOP form done. That needed to be finished by the end of the evening so I had all on to get that and everything else done ready for the turn around.

Wednesday was another full day but managed to get everything done I wanted to. Still, I arrived home with half a class of books to mark and the hope that I’d get the other half done on Thursday afternoon, after my triangulation meeting.

Thursday was my last day at my placement 1 school. I also had my formal observation and my triangulation meeting and I got 1: Outstanding for both. I am so over the moon! In fact I got ‘Outstanding’ for all the teaching standards apart from 4 – Plan and teach well structured lessons and 5 – Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils. So they are definitely something I need to work on however, I feel like I still need to work on all of them but needless to say I’m still over the moon with that result.

On Friday my friend Becky came. It’s the first time she’s visited my house since I moved in with my partner. We gave each other our Christmas presents – she bought me a print from one of my favourite artists Neil Simone – and we had lots of tea and cake and it was such a lovely day. We both really felt like spring is on it’s way.

Over half term I have lots to do such as tidying, filing, reading, job applications, assignment re-submissions, gardening, washing my car, washing, ironing, cooking and getting back in touch with friends – all those things that I haven’t been able to do while working. But first a rest.

This all starts on Monday this weekend I intend to read and relax and reflect and just be myself and do what I want when I want. This morning as a nice start I spotted a buzzard hunting over the fields and being mobbed by other birds. It’s been a while since I spotted anything and it’s made me feel really reassured.

Thank you so much for all of those still sticking with me. I honestly thought at Christmas that I wouldn’t finish this course or this placement but thanks to the support of my wonderful friends and family. I’ve made it this far … half way. Here’s to the next 5 months – wish me luck. No really, wish me luck!

A pretty regular week and a promise.

Monday was an ok day – nothing spectacular. I enjoyed marking and didn’t get round to applying for a job I wanted.

Tuesday was stressful. I had a drs appointment so that made me late to start work when I got home and I had two extra lessons to plan for that I hadn’t anticipated for the next day … I hate it when work sneaks up on me like that.

Wednesday was a good day I managed to get all my lesson planning done and some of the application form. I could have cracked on but I really want to start it fresh if I can. I decided to do it this weekend instead.

On Thursday I taught my three lessons back to back again but in the evening I got quite a lot done, even if I was too tired to work on my application again!

On Friday we had a session on ‘the best lesson I’ve taught so far’ I did mine about my year 7 apostrophe lesson and it was quite nice. In the evening we had Chinese and I fell asleep.

Over the weekend I finished my application for a job (finally) and have sent it off for proofreading. I also managed to get this weeks planning done more or less which leaves me with an afternoon free to catch up on ironing, the food shop and all that other delightful stuff.

I promise that more exciting things are coming up for instance I’m hoping I might get an interview soon, I should find out where my next placement is going to be (just waiting on confirmation) and the results of some of my assignments. Thank you for bearing with me while I tread water for a while.

Starting to feel like a proper Teacher.

On Monday I had a nice day. A good lesson and a poor lesson, but I learnt a lot from it. I also got some lesson planning and admin done.

Tuesday was a bit of a muddled day. I felt really unorganised but for no reason really and my lesson didn’t go as well as I hoped. I now need to re-build my class’ confidence in me and make sure I’m on the top of my game with my lesson plans.

During Wednesday I had my first ‘formal observation’. I tried not to sweat it too much and to view it just as any other lesson and I felt it went ok. Somehow had a really busy day today although I’m not sure what I did over and above the usual. Maybe it’s catching up with me.

On Thursday I had my second ‘formal observations’ and received a solid ‘good’ for each of them. I also attended my first year 7 parents evening which was interesting. I’ve wanted to do lesson planning all week but I’m just too tired.

On Friday we had behaviour management session and a session on job applications which was really useful.

Over the weekend we’re having a quiet one again so that I can finish off my assignment. The word count, although under, is satisfactory and just needs proof reading. Other than that I hope I can get up to speed on lesson planning and some other admin before school next week.

It’s worth saying that I feel much better after my return from Christmas. Taking control of my own classes has really helped and I finally feel like a proper teacher and a proper trainee. Long may it continue.

The First (short) Week Back.

On Monday I woke up and got lots of housework done. I’d taken down the tree and all the decorations the previous day. I don’t much like having them up after New Year and take them down as soon as possible. I also got some assignment and job application done.

Over the next week I planned to work on lessons during the day, during my free periods and work on my assignment in the evenings and weekend. I’d also found a job to apply for which was nearly done – it just needed cutting down.

Tuesday was quite a relaxed day as I had two free periods and a meeting – so only two lessons to observe, nevertheless I felt anxious. I used the time to print what I had to do and go over my two lessons for the next day. I also planned what I was going to do when in my free periods.

After school in my meeting my timetable was edited to give me some more free time which has made me feel a little bit better. I’m closer to teaching 50% now than I thought.

During Wednesday I was due to deliver two lessons but the drama teacher was ill and had set written cover work so I actually had quite a lot of time to do planning. I delivered a year 10 lesson which went fairly well and progressed a lot with my work. I have had an awful lot of email to attend to and admin to do which means I finished late but I felt less anxious afterwards and hope I can stay afloat till the evening.

On Thursday, like Wednesday, I delivered two lessons. I actually really enjoyed them and anxiety was kept to a minimum. I also felt like people at school responded to me better. A good day.

On Friday I was back at uni, which was nice. We had a conference on assessment which could have been really dull but we had some excellent speakers. I also managed to get a bit of lesson planning done.

Over the weekend I intend to work on my assignment for the most part and get my job application sent off.

A week at home.

So, on Monday I wasn’t very productive but got through year 8 lesson planning.

On Tuesday I had to go to the doctors for a blood test and the consequential faint meant that I struggled to concentrate for the rest of the day but I did finish check over the year 8 lesson planning and got partially through year 10.

During Wednesday I had my hair cut which was really nice and finally finished all the lesson planning. Still not sure how good it is but I think that even if I had another month I’d still be fiddling and perfecting it. Sometimes enough is enough. The rest of the day I did some surprise baking ready for Christmas.

On Thursday I spent most of the day writing my assignment. I wrote about 800 words which is better than a kick in the teeth but I didn’t make it to the half way point which was my aim. Greg had a half day so in the evening we went round to his parents as we wont be seeing them this Christmas.

On Friday Greg and I nipped into town to return some items and had some brunch – it was nice and not too hectic, which was surprising. Then I spent the afternoon working on my assignment. I got to just over half way but didn’t reach my goal of 3000 words. Still, not too bad. I hope I’ll have enough time over the first few weekends in January to get it done.

Tomorrow I am finally going home to my family for Christmas and I intend to do no work. I’ll be posting again in the new year so for now, all that remains to say is have a very Happy Christmas and a fantastic new year.
