On Monday I had a fairly productive day. I did loads of washing and loads of house jobs and gardening. I finished washing and cleaning my car and I also did loads of research for my research assignment. I booked a consultation at the library to talk over my research methods etc for tomorrow which also means I can return the books I’ve borrowed that I’m not using and hopefully I’ll have an equally productive day tomorrow.
On Tuesday I had another really productive day. I managed to book the hair cut I was after and went to a meeting at uni about my research assignment – read a whole book for it and started on a second. I’ve made some really great progress. I hope I can keep up this pace.
Wednesday I went for my hair cutting which was good and then caved and did all my resource printing at home as I got an email from school to say the printer room was being re-done and might be out of action for a week or so. Rather than risk it an potentially have to deal with the stress I decided I’d rather have the cost of ink and paper. I then got on with yet more reading for my research assignment. I’m really pleased with how it’s going.
Thursday Greg had the day off so that I could go to the drs, wait in for our packages and cleaned the house. It all happened, though not in the order we expected and finally made it to my dads. We had a lovely ‘grazing tea’ and watched ‘Spectre’ which my dad had never seen before. It was really nice.
Friday was my birthday. I woke up early and read a whole book – I’ve read three books in three days which has been really enjoyable. We then had breakfast and I opened my presents with my family before going for a walk among the blue bells. In the afternoon we just chilled out and didn’t do too much which was lovely and in the evening we watched ‘Fantastic Beasts and where to find them’ which I haven’t seen yet and I really enjoyed.
This weekend we’re staying at my dad’s until Sunday morning we’re planning on going to the garden centre, out for a meal, taking the dogs for a lovely walk again and then visiting Greg’s family on the way back home. I’m looking forward to having Monday to prepare myself to go back to school. I hope I’ve planned enough.
On Monday I had a really productive day. I planned the first week of year 9. I intend to keep this up – planning the first week of each year group for the first three days and then if I have time repeat, making sure I have time to relax in between. Really, the most important part is getting the first week done but the more I can do, the more ahead of myself I’ll be and the less I’ll have to do during term time.
I also did all of our washing and it dried outside on the line which was really satisfying. That was about it. I also planned to get a large pile of washing done – riveting I know.
On Tuesday my car was MOTed and serviced and I got on with my planning. All went well and I managed to get the first week of year 8 done which was great and planned to do year 10 on Wednesday.
It’s been nice to work all day – be productive and yet achieve what I set out to do as well as get other things done – really refreshing.
Wednesday was more difficult. I’ve really struggled planning for this class – they’re just such a challenging dynamic and somehow I have to get them through Macbeth against their will … I struggled through planning two lessons and wanted to get the first week done on Thursday meaning I was all planned for the first week back.
Thursday was good. I managed to get the entirety of the first week planned which felt really good and the second week provisionally planned – in other words I know what I’m doing even if I haven’t put together the lesson plans for it.
Friday I wanted to be a day of house jobs. I got loads done and also had time for a nap and to do some chilling. It was nice.
This weekend my brother is staying with us again as he’s going to a wedding nearby and Greg and I are going to my Grandma’s 80th birthday party – afternoon tea which will be nice. Not sure what Sunday will hold, maybe a chilled day with Greg, maybe an opportunity to finish off my house jobs.
Next week I think my priority will have to be my research assignment, which I’m actually looking forward to. I know I really need to get cracking with it but I have been putting it second to planning for going back.
On Monday I started teaching again. The lesson with year 9 did not go as well as I’d hoped but I’m hoping it’s just getting used to a new way of working. I did have a really productive day and I’ve planned for the rest of the week so now it’s just doing it and getting prepared for what I have to do over Easter.
On Tuesday I taught two lesson, getting grade 2 ‘good’ for both and got some really good feedback. I also had quite a productive day.
Wednesday was my fairly free day so I got lots done but I also felt really ill – shivery and cold so in the evening I had a bath and just went to bed in the hope that I’d feel better.
Thursday was meant to be a busy day but in the middle of the night I woke up with a migraine and didn’t make it into school. Not a productive day in terms of I just lay in bed in a dark room and felt sorry for myself but actually in the end it did me good.
On Friday I tried to catch up with my CM seeing as I’d missed my CM meeting on Thursday. I had a really good lesson with year 9. I realised that my suspicions were correct about the pupils – they’re testing me, Kate confirmed this, and my initial instinct to tell them off were correct. I only held back as because they’re more able I didn’t want to patronise them but I realise I must earn their respect by being strong and sometimes they need to realise that they’re still children for them moment, only lacking a certain emotional maturity.
We finished at lunch time. It was great to be able to come home and dump my stuff and hang out with Greg and my brother who is visiting this weekend. We got lots done on the garden and went out for a lovely meal with Greg’s best friend. Lots of red wine was had.
This weekend I think I’m going to take off completely, or as completely as my conscience will let me. There’s still pleanty to get done on the garden and I’m looking forward to spending time with my brother.
I do have lots to do over Easter – planning for my classes, that I take over full time after Easter and research for my assignment but I also intend to have lots of rest and spend time doing what I want to do. Spring is my favourite season – everything is waking up, the days are getting brighter and longer and warmer and most of the time I want to be outside and soaking it all up. It’s also my birthday soon, after all. Watch this space.

First week at PP2
On Monday I felt like I hit the ground running. I observed all my classes and even partially taught year 10 as there was a cover teacher in there.
On Tuesday I did the same and managed to speak to all my teachers about what I’ll be teaching after Easter until June half term. I feel like I now have a clear idea and have got a copy of all the staff resources. I just need to check out the schemes of work now and print them ready for full on planning over the Easter holidays. I also managed to get a big chunk of my planning assignment done so I’m onto the last part. That also has to be done over this weekend.
Wednesday was a fairly free day and hence really productive. During period 1 I was involved with department marking, moderating and input which was fun. It was nice to spend time with the department. I also managed my CMs class during period 2 while she sorted some things from the marking. The rest of the day I got a good chunk of an assignment done which I was pleased about. I was then hopeful that I might even finish it before the weekend leaving that free for planning my 6 lessons.
My first observation was also arranged with my CL&VT for Tuesday but all that’s to come.
Thursday was quite a busy day. I even taught the year 10s a bit while they were calm. It wasn’t as good as I’d hoped as the class teacher kind of launched me into them mid lesson but it went ok. I managed to get quite a bit of my assignment done – steady as she goes. I also had my second CM meeting which went well. We agreed it’s all about planning next week.
On Friday I was on a school trip for the majority of the day to Preston Sports arena. I hoped that I would get some work done however this turned out not to be the case. It was a very busy and hectic day and the kids were very excitable. If nothing else it taught me that I can manage behaviour.
The weekend will be spent finishing off my planning assignment and planning lessons for the coming week. I hope I also get chance to spend some time in the sun as the weather forecaste is very promising.
On Monday was a full on day with inductions, safeguarding etc and being given lots to read. It really was crazy. I also met some of the English Department who seem lovely and friendly.
On Tuesday I met all my classes and teachers. I have a mixed view I think 2/3 classes will be lovely but I have a really tricky year 10 class … no sight of any drama lessons but I’ll see if I can get involved in an after school club or something.
Wednesday was another busy day. I was roped into a Geography trip for the first two periods which was nice. I got to know some of the kids and staff and then I was shadowing a year 9 pupil who happened to be in my classes – bonus. In the late afternoon I found out I had an interview but didn’t have chance to do anything as we had mindset CPD after school. I really enjoyed it but was interested that everybody else seemed to take it at face value and be open minded. At other schools I’ve been at some teachers have been quite dismissive of it. Once I got home I was so tired I didn’t feel like I could face interview preparation so I chose my poems and did a bit of research and basic planning and vowed to get up early on Thursday. Which I did
Thursday was therefore yet another crazy long day. I got up at 5.45 and into school for 7.30. Setting off 10 minutes early saved me half an hour at the other end. So I planned for an hour in the morning then I had 1 free p5 which gave me another hour. Then I had a break for my first CM meeting and stayed until 6.30 getting the rest all done. I even managed to operate the printer as we were given our official lanyards, key and fob. I can now get anywhere in the school like any other teacher – It really makes me feel like an ‘official’ member of staff and on an even keel with my colleagues – it helps to add to my sense of professionalism.
On Friday I did my interview. I arrived and we were shown into a room. There was only one other candidate who was lovely. We were given an ‘in tray task’ which I’ve never had to do before – turned out it was marking – we got given a mark scheme which I was greatful for – and I felt that that went ok. Then we had a tour of the school which was nice. The pupils seemed lovely and it was only a small school with a real sense of community. Then I taught my lesson. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great either. I reflected and prepared for the interview questions and tried not to panic. During break we met the rest of the English Department who seemed really friendly and supportive and finally was the interview. I was pleased with how that went. I really got into the swing of it and reflected critically on my lesson. I was then sent home with the promise that I’d be called later with feedback. I got the job! I got the job. I still can’t quite believe it. It’s such a relief to know that I don’t have to do anymore applications and the school is only 15 minutes away from where I live. The job is only 12 months maternity cover but it’ll get me my NQT year and a good reputation in a good school I hope. I’m thrilled.
Over the weekend I’m taking my mum to see the new Beauty and the Beast film with the rest of the family because it’s her birthday and also Mother’s day is coming up. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s our favourite and I hope it lives up to my expectations.
One more week till placement 2 and I still had lots to get through at the start of the week. Monday, therefore, was a very hectic day. I did all the washing and seeing as it was such a lovely day dried a lot of it outside! Then I did a job application and lots of admin. I even found time to organise my potting station. During the day I got a phone call inviting me to an ‘informal chat’ with the head of department of the school I applied for last week so I’ll be going to that on Wednesday and I have an inkling that the interview might be on Friday.
On Tuesday I was in uni. First I went to the library and got a load of books out for my upcoming assessments so that was successful. I then went to my lecture on A Level and we finished around lunch time. When I got home I cracked on with my second submission of my critical reflection which went really well and I think I’ve finished. I’ve just got to proofread at a later date. Afterwards I got everything ready for my busy day on Wednesday.
On Wednesday I had a bit of a nightmare. Our shopping was late so that threw me off right from the get go. Then I was nervous all day and couldn’t get things done. I went to the dentist and got a clean bill of health for my teeth but forgot my purse! After that I ate some lunch and got ready for my ‘informal chat’. I went and had a hot drive there. It only took half an hour to wonder round but I forgot to ask any questions. I didn’t think I’d done very well but now I have an interview on Friday! So in the evening I briefly planned my lesson and planned for Thursday to be taken over by lesson planning and interview preparation.
On Thursday I took stock of everything and realised that hopefully I might not have that much left to do by the end of the week, which felt really good. I got on with my interview preparation and tried to be calm about it all.
I also went to get my nails done for the first time ever! I figured I deserved it and it might make me feel more confident for my interview and first placement.
On Friday it was interview day! I didn’t get it. It was a really strange interview. There were meant to be 6 of us but one candidate didn’t show, so there were 5 of us. We pretty much went straight into the 25 minute lesson. It wasn’t a great lesson, but it wasn’t awful. I had about 25 minutes while the other group of candidates taught so I made some quick reflection notes to talk about and went over some of the questions I thought they might ask. After that, they took two of us into another room and told us we hadn’t been successful … so I didn’t even get the chance to interview and the head (I presume it was the head) didn’t even introduce herself or shake my hand … I also know there were three positions available – one permanent and two maternity cover so they made their decision based on the 25 minute lesson alone … I do feel a bit put out that I never got the chance to talk to them really but there you go. On to the next one. I’m still going to ring up on Monday during my lunch break and try to get some feedback and I applied for another on Friday night.
Over the weekend I wanted a really good rest before starting the last stage of my PGCE – PP2. I don’t intend to do much work so that’ll be nice and something to look forward to.
So, the first week back to uni and the second to last before I finish for my NQT period … that is a scary thought!
On Monday I went into uni during the morning. We handed in our reports from placement 1 and I had a meeting with my course leader to discuss some questions I had about re-submissions of assignments. I then went for a coffee with my friend Heather which was lovely and came home and had quite a productive day. I got lots done including a job application! Hopefully I’ll be sending that off before the end of the week.
On Tuesday I had my third tutorial with my course leader which went really well. I went for another coffee with Heather and we spent a couple of hours putting the world to rights. In the afternoon I worked on my re-submissions with varying success. Sometimes I was really productive, others I wasn’t. I hoped that I’d have more success on Wednesday.
Wednesday was a day off from uni so I had a fairly productive day. I got lots of jobs done around the house ready for my friend to come for tea and cake after uni tomorrow. I also got a bit of applying for jobs done and some work on my assignment.
The best bit of the day was hearing back from my second placement school with arrangements for the first day, what I needed to do, bring and prepare before going. So I got that done too.
Thursday I was back in uni for the launch of our research assignment – it made me panic a bit and I’m not sure why. Perhaps it’s because I’ve got 2 re-submissions, 4 job applications and a research assignment on the go … After uni Heather and Becky came round for tea and cake which was nice. I did a bit of work but was too anxious to make much headway so I didn’t make as much progress as I’d have liked. Hopefully, as we’re only in two days, next week I’ll get a lot done.
On Friday we were again in uni for the full day the morning lecture left a lot to be desired but the afternoon ones were great as usual. I have a lot of work to do but I’m really tired. Hopefully by the end of the weekend I’ll have applied for 1/4 of the jobs I have on the go and be a bit more organised with what I’m doing. Next week I’m only in 2/5 days so hopefully I’ll get more done then too.
Over the weekend my Mum and Step-Dad are coming to visit and we’re going out to the pub for a meal which will be really nice.
I hope you’re all having a lovely, productive week and that you have a restful weekend too.
