The Incline to the Holidays.

Last week was a bit of a write off. On Tuesday I had a migraine which put me out of kilter for the rest of the week and culminated in me having a long chat with my CL to get me back on track … the less said about it the better really but needless to say I started this week with a problem solving to do list and that is exactly what I’ve done.

On Monday I took my second full lesson which went reasonably well. The beginning and end of the lesson were good but I kind of lost them in the middle … I managed to pull them back though and after some reflection I know what I need to do to improve next time.

On Tuesday I did an impromptu starter with year 7 which went really well and although their behaviour for my CM is not good, I didn’t have a problem this time. I’ve found the key is really clear instructions and knowledge of the consequences of their actions – which I am confident in carrying out. (In other words having a backup plan in the form of a writing if pupils won’t do as I’ve asked)

During Wednesday I delivered a drama starter which went really well.

On Thursday I also delivered a plenary – unfortunately it was cut short due to the class teacher running over … I wish I’d have ended it properly rather than letting it trail off into nothingness (something I need to work on) but otherwise it went well.

On Friday I was in uni – I had a good day and started to wind down for the weekend by prioritising all my jobs!

As you can see my delivery of lessons has increased this week – this is to give me more control and experience so that I’m ready for taking on Y8 and Y10 full time after Christmas. Something I face with determination but no small amount of trepidation…

Over the weekend my brother has come to stay with us for a week as he’s working near where we live. I’m also on primary placement for that week so it’ll be nice to finish dead on the bell and be able to get home and spend time with him as well as catching up on work I have to do.

After this week I have one more week at placement – where I’ll be observed by my PM and I also need to get my resources sorted for the first week at least. Then I have a ‘research week’ at Uni, which I’m looking forwards to although it’s likely I’ll be given another assignment to do. After that I have a week ‘off’ where I’ll be working my socks off to get everything done so that I can have a proper week off over Christmas. Just 4 weeks to go!

Up and down but feeling more settled.

On Monday I delivered a starter with the Y10s. The starter went really well but the plenary was rubbish. After school I had a meeting that went on until 5.20 so I didn’t get home till gone 6.

On Tuesday I had my meeting with my CM which was good. I had some really positive feedback and some good pointers however, she did ask me to plan pretty much half a lesson with less than two days notice … that was a pain but I got it done although that meant working till 8.

During Wednesday I gave my Drama starter that also went really well. I observed a really great lesson with year 11 doing a carousel which they really bought into. I also observed some modelling of annotating an extract which was really useful considering that’s what I’m going to do with the year 10s next week – I’m looking forward to that one.

On Thursday I had a less good day. My year 7 starter and lesson didn’t go very well. The pupils just didn’t get it but I also I don’t think I explained myself very well … something I really need to work on – explaining clearly enough and pitching it at the right level. On the other hand I’m trying not to beat myself up too much. A part of me feels that no matter how well I explained myself a majority of them wouldn’t have understood.

On Friday I was back at uni we had our cross curricular conference day which was good and then, after handing in our assignments, we were allowed to go at 12 so I had a long lunch with a friend and came home to catch up on filing and all the other little jobs that I’ve been meaning to do like backing up my files.

On Saturday I’ve planned to do some more planning (surprise, surprise!) and we have an engagement celebration meal in Liverpool which I’m looking forward to. Hopefully Sunday will be a day of absolute chill, providing I get this planning done.

Until next week, TTFN X

P.S I also found out I got 88% on my first assignment – feeling really pleased about that.

Bonfire Night.

On Monday I observed some very interesting lessons and felt like I fitted back in to the school right away. I had a really good meeting with my CM and we started planning what was going to happen over the next two weeks and she gave me some really good pointers for my lesson the following day.

On Tuesday I was really nervous all day for my first full lesson during P4. It went really well although I felt I could have used my voice better. I knew how I wanted it to come out and sound but it just wouldn’t. There had been some confusion earlier in the day about actually who was going to be there. I had been told 8 pupils. I taught 22.

After the lesson I had another meeting with my CM. We made some changes to seating and talked about how we were going to approach the next few lessons having met the class and the difference between abilities of pupils. She also advised me to be quite stern as some of those pupils need it. I need to remember that I’m in charge and this is my classroom. I also need to give explicit instructions one at a time – don’t be afraid to wait. and also to sign post the timings more clearly. There were a few tweeks to the entry routines but other than that she was really happy and said there was nothing glaring that she thought was rubbish! Nobody died!

During Wednesday I delivered my first drama starter which I was really pleased with, really enjoyed it and observed my CM introduce year 10 to Jekyll and Hyde. I’m really excited for that SOW. I also finished proofreading the majority of my assignment. Just got that to tidy up on Friday and it should be ready to hand in.

On Thursday I had a busy day but finished my starters and plenary preparation for next week.

On Friday I had an ‘Independent Study Day’ as some people were still on half term. I spent it finishing my assignment which I’m really pleased about but also managed to squeeze in some time for some yoga to easy my shoulders and some meditation which was really nice.

In the evening Greg and I went to the cinema to see ‘Inferno’ the new film for the Dan Brown books. It was certainly more intense than the other adaptations of the books. Afterwards we met some friends for dinner.

On Saturday we went to the bonfire in our village and I really loved it. I’ve never been that into Halloween but I’ve always loved bonfire night and fireworks. We took some mulled wine which was gratefully received by all and then came back and watched ‘V for Vendetta’. We had a really lovely evening.

Today I want to try and get some lesson planning done but right now I’m making a shepherd’s pie for tomorrow and Greg and his dad are doing some jobs around the house that we’ve been meaning to get around to for ages. Later we’re going round to his parents for Sunday Lunch. I’m really looking forward to it but for now, while I’m waiting for the potatoes to boil I’ll get onto the lesson planning!

TTFN, hope you all had a wonderful bonfire night! X
